New NYC Rules?
December 5, 2005, 2:25 pm

This morning, as I was heading into a subway car, a woman stopped me, pointed to my coffee cup, and said “Be careful, the new rules take effect today.” Seeing that the train I was about to get on was actually the wrong one (it was a D train, I need to take the N) I stepped back towards her and asked her what in the hell she was talking about.

“You can now get fined $25 for eating or drinking on subway”

Say WHAT?! I knew it was illegal to drink alcoholic beverages on the subway, and that much makes sense to me. But you’re trying to tell me that now not only do I have to deal with jam packed subway cars filled with noisy, annoying, and rude people, but you want me to do it all without the assistance of caffeine? I’m sorry that is NOT going to work for me.

So I tried to do a little research. I searched everywhere on the MTA website. I even googled “new rules” + NYC subway. This is all I came up with: From the New York Times but it makes no mention of said “beverages” rule.

I hate blogging about something as mundane as my commute to work, but this is a level one priority in my eyes. Because you REALLY don’t want to talk to me in the morning before I have my coffee and if people are no longer allowed to caffeinate themselves on their morning commutes, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we’re going to see a rise in aggravated assaults in the NYC subway system.

So if anyone has any idea what the hell this woman was talking about, I would very much appreciate the heads up.

And with that, I am going to go grab another cup of coffee.

I’ve heard a lot about this (I think on the local news). Here is a link to some more info: http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=53879. It looks like drinking your coffee could cost you.

the woman was right, you can get fined for drinking coffee on the subway now. I am not sure how strictly this will be enforced. I totally agree with you that it’s absolutely nonsense. Like being on a dirty train full of annoying people at 7:30 on a Monday morning isn’t bad enough, now they want to take my coffee away? Fascist bastards!!!

There was a link to the new rules in that NYT article:

4. Section 1050.6 is amended to read as follows:
Section 1050.6 Use of the transit system

(f) No person [shall bring or carry onto], while on a conveyance, shall possess any liquid in or consume any liquid from an open container.

So it looks like there is a coffee ban. Fascists.

Turtle Thanks for the link, even if it does confirm my worst fears.

Welshman you and I have been agreeing much too often lately, it’s a bit unnerving. Lol. But seriously, don’t the NYC Subway cops have more important things to worry about?! Like terrorists, far jumpers, pick pockets, sexual assaults, etc.

The second time I visit your blog since its creation I read on a survey that you are a self-proclaimed “HUGE TEASE” and that you skinny-dipped in highschool. Those are two images that I will have to fight hard to remove from my head. That being said, your constant drinking and participation in beruit are admirable. You set a high bar for me to clear. You are the best sister ever and I love you very much.

Aww, nice comment from Buddy. And another reason why my family members don’t have a clue about my blog.

Everyone else has answered your question, but you’re not allowed to drink anything with an open container. My question is how strict they’re going to be with one of those coffee holder things. The good ones can be turned upside down and not spill…

some people who are on the subway deserve to have hot coffee spilt on them anyway
